About eCollective
The Education Collective
What is eCollective?
eCollective is not a school, a company, or a charity. It is a collective: a set of initiatives that share one goal—open, affordable, lifelong learning—and the people building them.
The name means two things at once: an education collective, and a bet that the fastest way to raise the collective intelligence of the world is to fix how people learn.
Our Mission
To increase the collective intelligence of the world. The fastest way to do that is to fix how people learn: make it open, affordable, and lifelong, so that what you can learn is limited by your curiosity, not by your zip code, your bank account, or your age.
🔓 Open
Knowledge should flow freely across borders and generations. No gatekeepers, no permission required to learn.
💸 Affordable
Education shouldn't cost a decade of debt. The best learning available should also be the cheapest.
⏱️ Mastery over seat time
You move on when you've learned it, not when the calendar says. Learning at the speed of need.
🔁 Lifelong
Not a few years in youth followed by decades of nothing. Learning is for every age, and it should be enjoyable.
🧪 Evidence
Skills are demonstrated through real work, and outcomes are measured and published rather than assumed.
The Story
eCollective began with a simple question: How do we increase the collective intelligence of the world?
The answer starts with education. Not by building one more institution, but by making the tools of learning open and affordable enough that anyone can build their own path, prove what they know, and pass it on.
The first initiative was DIY Degree, a guide to assembling your own education from what already exists. Open Degree followed, to make the outcomes and credentials behind that education a public standard anyone can use. InstructOS takes the next piece: a model and tools that let teachers work independently of the school system, and let the experts who never called themselves teachers turn what they know into a course they can sell, so knowledge gets passed on instead of lost. Each new initiative takes on another piece of the same problem.
eCollective was founded by Josh McWilliam.
For Josh, this is personal. eCollective is his vision of abundance for the next generation—his own kids most of all—and the why behind everything he builds: that they grow up in a world of abundance rather than scarcity. It is also a rallying cry for everyone who wants to work together to make that abundance real for all. If that is the future you want to build, this is your invitation.
"The world doesn't need more degrees. It needs more capable people, and a way for anyone to become one."
The Initiatives
Each initiative is one piece of the collective. Linked initiatives are live today; the rest are on the way.
DIY Degree
An AI tutor built on the Open Degree commons: name a topic, get the best free resource for it, learn it with an AI guide, prove it with a short check, and get the next topic within reach. Built to work alongside teachers, not around them, with every resource rated for audience before a young learner sees it. Learning at the speed of need.
VisitOpen Degree
The Public Standard for Learning: a free, open, crowdsourced graph of concepts and outcomes that makes skills and credentials portable across schools, platforms, and careers. Around it, a commons is being built for what attaches to the graph: the best resources for each concept, rated for quality and audience; the standards every jurisdiction publishes; and what institutions teach. Open to read, improved by contributors, and it never tracks a learner.
VisitInstructOS
A model and set of tools for turning what you know into a course, a lesson, or a mini degree, even if you have never taught or designed a curriculum; underneath, everything maps to a knowledge graph, so learners move through topics the way understanding actually connects. Open by design in the plain sense: few barriers, kept inexpensive. Built for two kinds of people: teachers who want independence from the school system, and experts who never called themselves teachers, whose knowledge is worth money and worth passing on.
VisitGet Involved
eCollective grows through the people who build with it. Whether you bring skills, ideas, or a project of your own, there's a place for you in the collective.
